49:00 Consolidation in Risk
In the board game Risk, consolidation is not an explicit rule but a key strategic concept for concentrating your armies into strong positions, primarily at the end of your turn, to better defend your territories and prepare for future attacks.
The "Maneuver" PhaseConsolidation is executed during the Maneuver (or Fortify) phase, the final step of a player's turn. After placing new troops and conducting all desired attacks, a player can move their armies as follows:
Move once per turn: You can only make one single fortification move per turn.Move many troops: You can move any number of troops from one of your territories to an adjacent, connected territory you also control.
Maintain minimum presence: You must always leave at least one troop behind in the originating territory
Connected path: The territories must have a continuous, connected path of your own controlled territories between them. You cannot move troops through an enemy-controlled territory or split the movement into multiple destinations.
Strategic ImportanceConsolidation is vital for a strong Risk strategy:Defense: Instead of spreading forces thin, you amass armies at "choke points" or border territories to deter opponents from attacking or to ensure you can repel an invasion.Continent Control: A primary goal is to control an entire continent for bonus troops at the start of your turn. Consolidation helps you fortify the borders of your controlled continent (e.g., North America or Australia) to make holding it easier.
Gathering Strength: By gathering a large army in one place, you create an overwhelming force, positioning yourself to conquer a large number of territories or eliminate an opponent in a subsequent turn.
Army Representation: The physical game pieces include infantry (1 troop), cavalry (5 troops), and artillery (10 troops) to help visually consolidate large numbers of armies on a single territory space, and you can exchange these denominations at any time for convenience.
