This is just waffle. Islam cannot work without sharia in same way that a car cannot run without an engine. Rothman is completely ignoring the public purpose of religion: to harmonise your moral system with your laws. Because he is too afraid to point out that Christianity is kaput and then offer to replace it with sharia, he opts for displacement therapy and so talks about "studying the soul". Spirituality is the reward you get when you know you are following your own rules correctly.
