Even the most fertile married couple would have to admit that the overwhelming majority of the sex they have was purely recreational. It is actually horrifying to imagine how many children we would have if every time we had sex offspring was the result.
What we are to consider here is the opportunity cost of having purely recreational sex with people not our spouse.
This is perhaps the difference between humans and animals: female non-human animals choose the father of their offspring with more care than Western women these days.
Let us also consider the kind of society that would make fornication - forbidden by all five world religions - an integral part its culture and whether such a society can have that much further to fall.
