1:00  Machiavelli on ageing empires

AI Overview

Niccolò Machiavelli viewed the decline of empires and republics as an inevitable process driven by the loss of virtù (civic vigor, skill, and discipline) and the rise of corruption, complacency, and internal ambition. In his analyses, particularly in The Discourses on Livy and The Prince, he emphasized that an empire's failure is rarely just a result of external force, but rather stems from internal decay and the abandonment of self-sufficient military and political structures.

Here are the key points Machiavelli made regarding declining empires:

Reliance on Mercenaries (The Primary Weakness): Machiavelli argued that the primary sign and cause of a declining state is hiring mercenaries rather than using citizen soldiers. He directly attributed the collapse of the Roman Empire to the hiring of Goth mercenaries, which he believed weakened Roman military strength, discipline, and devotion to the state.

The "Enemy Within": Machiavelli believed that a nation is more likely to be destroyed by its internal divisions and vices than by external invaders. He warned that when citizens and leaders become complacent, they fail to recognize the threats posed by exceptionally ambitious individuals—such as Julius Caesar in Rome—who ultimately transform a free republic into a tyranny.

Decadence and Moral Decay: Machiavelli linked the decline of "manliness" or civic virtue (virtù) to a shift towards excessive wealth, luxury, and complacency, which he argued erodes the discipline needed for self-rule.

The Inevitability of Cycle: He believed that states are in constant motion, either rising or falling. A state that tries to remain static or stable, rather than expanding, will eventually be ruined, as it will be unable to survive attacks from more aggressive states.

Corrupt Political Structures: When citizens become corrupt and lose interest in the common good, their institutions—no matter how well-planned—become useless in protecting their liberty.

Key Quote: "An empire toppled by its enemies can rise again, but one which crumbles from within, is dead forever".

AI Overview

UK hate speech and hate crime laws protect five core characteristics: race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, and transgender identity. Hostility based on these, often covering perceived identity, allows for increased sentencing. Laws like the Public Order Act 1986 criminalize inciting hatred, while Non-Crime Hate Incidents (NCHIs) may be recorded.

Key Protected Characteristics

The five nationally recognized, monitored strands in UK hate crime legislation are:

Race: Colour, nationality, or ethnic/national origins.

Religion: Religious belief or lack of belief.

Sexual Orientation: Homosexual, heterosexual, or bisexual orientation.

Disability: Any physical or mental impairment.

Transgender Identity: Including transsexual individuals and those undergoing gender reassignment.

Legislative Framework

Public Order Act 1986: Prohibits threatening or abusive speech intended to stir up hatred on grounds of race, religion, or sexual orientation.

Crime and Disorder Act 1998: Covers "aggravated offences" for race and religion, allowing for higher sentences.

Sentencing Act 2020: Mandates court-imposed sentencing uplifts for crimes motivated by hostility regarding the five characteristics.

Hate Speech and Online Content
Hate speech legislation applies to both offline behaviour and online content (websites, social media) that is abusive, insulting, or threatening.
Non-crime hate incidents (NCHIs) are recorded by police when an incident is perceived to be motivated by hostility but does not meet the criminal threshold.

Contextual Factors
Perceived Identity: A hate crime is recognized if the offender targets someone based on a perception of their identity, even if that perception is wrong.
Freedom of Expression: While protected, freedom of expression under the Human Rights Act 1998 is not absolute and may be restricted to prevent disorder or protect the rights of others.

Paul Vanderklay continues to repeat his Islamophobic tropes while refusing to engage with anyone with any knowledge of Islam

1:23:00  What exactly would be the problem of having your failing moral and political system being replaced by a better one? PVK is trotting out the usual Islamophobic tropes ie that Islam would dominate. Shouldn't the better dominate over inferior?

1:24:00  Ancient religions have stood the test of time, says Bret Weinstein, but PVK talks about FGM and honour killings. He expects every Muslim to be loudly condemning these practices the way someone very unreasonable indeed would expect men to loudly condemn rape every time they hear of a woman being raped. Do Shias in Iran practise FGM? No, but that is not enough for PVK. He pretends honour killings is a Muslim practice when it is the Old Testament that requires drunk and disobedient sons to be executed. If it is sometimes known to happen on the Indian subcontinent, it is not just Muslims who practise it.

1:26:00  PVK expects guarantees of perfect practices in Islam (from whom exactly?) when heretic burning was a Christian practice. When the practice of heretic burning stopped, liberalism replaced Christianity. What lesson does PVK extract from this? That the practice of heretic burning should never have stopped?

1:27:00  If you have a recipe book that produced perfect results when you followed it properly but stopped when you failed to follow it, who is to blame?

"Christianity is a culturally adaptive religion." This means Christianity has no principles and is just a brand to sell  your snake oil. It is after all true that Christianity has no codified principles and that it has been changing its story since its inception. Christianity began as Arian then became Trinitarian and then became Unitarian in America and is now liberal, feminist and LGBT-friendly.

Orthodox Christianity is only "doing very well right now" because of White Nationalists who have joined it after rejecting Lutheranism in America because they considered it too too liberal. Catholicism is also rejected because it is well known for submitting to the liberal order.

AI Overview

Studies suggest a high correlation between father-absent homes and criminal behavior, with estimates showing that 70% to 90% of young men in prison grew up without their father. Research indicates children from such homes are at a greater risk of engaging in criminal activity, with some studies showing they are twice as likely to be convicted.

Key Findings: A 2021 report noted that 76% of young men in prison in England and Wales had absent fathers.

Youth Offenders: About 70% of young offenders in some studies come from lone-parent families.

Gang Membership: A high percentage of gang members come from father-absent homes.

Incarceration Rates: Children living with only one parent or neither are more likely to have a violent conviction by the age of 50, according to some analyses.

Contextual Factors: While father absence is a significant factor, researchers also highlight that poverty and the quality of parenting are crucial, contributing factors.

Some research suggests children in father-absent homes are significantly more likely to engage in crime. Others note that while 76% of young offenders have an absent father, other studies suggest only 47% of inmates reported growing up with both parents.

AI Overview

There are more disabled people in the United States now than in previous years. Data indicates a steady, long-term increase in disability prevalence, with a notable acceleration in the number of Americans identifying as disabled following the COVID-19 pandemic.

As of early 2026, the number of Americans aged 16 and older reporting a disability has hovered near record highs, recently holding at approximately 36.2 million.

Key Trends and Statistics

Post-2020 Surge: Disability prevalence among younger adults (ages 16–34) has risen, a trend that accelerated after 2020.

Current Prevalence: Over 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. now report having a disability, representing roughly 28.7% of the population.

Aging Population: A major driver is the aging population, as disability rates are significantly higher among those over 65 (40%–50%+).

Childhood Disabilities: The rate of developmental disabilities in U.S. children (ages 3–17) has also increased, rising from 16.2% (2009–2011) to over 17% in more recent reports.

Rise in Mental Health Conditions: A significant portion of the increase in disability claims since 2020 is attributed to mental health or behavioral conditions.

Reasons for the Increase

Long COVID: Lingering effects of COVID-19 have created new disabilities and worsened existing conditions.

Improved Detection: Increased awareness, improved screening, and broader diagnostic criteria for conditions such as autism and ADHD have increased reporting rates.

Aging Demographic: As a larger portion of the population enters older age groups, the total number of people with age-related functional limitations grows.

Chronic Health Conditions: Rising rates of conditions like obesity and diabetes have contributed to higher disability prevalence.

While some surveys have shown slight fluctuations, the consensus in the 2020s points to a sustained, elevated number of Americans with disabilities.

1:00:00  Twelve Table of Rome

AI Overview

The Twelve Tables (circa 450 BC) were the foundation of ancient Roman law, established to codify unwritten customs and provide legal transparency following intense plebeian pressure on the patrician class. Posted in the Roman Forum, these laws covered legal procedures, property rights, family authority, and inheritance, acting as a critical step in reducing arbitrary legal decisions by magistrates.

Key Details of the Twelve Tables

Origin: Created by a committee of ten men known as the decemviri.

Context: Developed during a period of conflict between plebeians (commoners) and patricians (aristocrats), ensuring laws were displayed publicly for all to see.

Contents: The tables, which were destroyed by Gauls in 390 BC, largely covered private disputes and procedural law rather than constitutional law.

Major Legal Principles Covered

Legal Procedure (Tables I-III): Established formal trial procedures. If a defendant refused to appear in court, a plaintiff could use force, but only in front of witnesses.

Debt/Foreclosure (Table III): Creditors could shackle debtors and eventually sell them into slavery, though this was later reformed.

Family/Paternal Authority (Table IV): Granted the father (paterfamilias) absolute power of life and death over children. It also mandated that a "dreadfully deformed child" be killed.

Inheritance/Guardianship (Table V): Allowed for inheritance to be passed by will and established guardians for women and the insane.

Property Law (Tables VI-VIII): Regulated property transfers, land disputes, and debt. It also addressed damage caused by animals or falling trees.

Public/Religious Law (Tables X-XII): Included regulations against excessive funerals, such as prohibiting burial or burning of dead bodies within the city limits.

The Twelve Tables were seen as a major move toward equality, allowing plebeians to know their rights and challenge the ruling class. They remained the foundation of Roman law for centuries.

I was only trying to make the point that if Christians were being rational, they would consider Christians who believe in Christianity to be better than people who claim to be Christians and then qualify their Christianity by saying they are a "Christian atheist", like Bart Ehrman.

In my view, if you believe in successful Christianity, you would have to worship the Trinity because Trinitarian churches are the more powerful than non-Trinitarian churches eg Unitarian Christianity, Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses.

A confirmed Christian would be higher status than a cultural Christian though I accept that there could be confirmed Christians who go through the motions of being Christian but who are still not believing Christians.

If Catholics have a Pope and Anglicans have an Archbishop of Canterbury that are secretly or openly atheists, then Christianity would acquire the reputation of not being a religion taken seriously even by people who claim to be Christian. If Christians tolerate a Pope or Archbishop of Canterbury who does not even believe in God, then this suggests that the majority of Christians do not in fact believe in Christianity either, if they are prepared to tolerate being led by leaders who do not even subscribe to the belief system of Christianity.

8:00  My exchange with Objective Ethics:

@OfficialSecularKoranism
Have you noticed that religious groups are the most powerful groups of all? And have you also noticed that the American Republic is proto-Muslim?

@ObjectiveEthics
Comparing religious empires to non-religious empires is a false equivalence fallacy often referred to as 'bothsideism'.  There are no known empires that were historically non-religious and it is assumed that well over 90% of all people are religious.  While that number is in steep decline, the global estimates are still around 92% religious vs 8% non-religious.
As for your other question about proto-muslim, I don't even know what that is supposed to be.  Are you referring to Christianity or Rahbbinic Judaism, or something else entirely?

@OfficialSecularKoranism
If you believe in the Abrahamic God as a gentile while rejecting the Trinity, you are closer to being Muslim than being a Jew or Christian. Trinitarian Christians would burn Unitarian Christians at the stake eg Michael Servetus.

@ObjectiveEthics
Yes the Catholic inquisitions were vile.  But that doesn't answer my question about your comment.  What is "Proto-muslim" in your opinion?

@OfficialSecularKoranism
I thought I had answered your question with " If you believe in the Abrahamic God as a gentile while rejecting the Trinity, you are closer to being Muslim than being a Jew or Christian." The Founding Fathers rejected the Trinity while still believing in God. For this reason  I call them proto-Muslim.

@ObjectiveEthics
Oh my apologies sister.  I did not realize that was in direct response to my question. Wouldn't that be more accurately stated as simply Unitarian Christianity or perhaps Arianism?

@OfficialSecularKoranism
Unitarian Christianity is closest to Islam because Unitarian Christians are supposed to believe that Jesus was mortal, and this is what Muslims also believe. In fact, Jews and Muslims believe that all the prophets of God were mortal though Jews reject the prophethood of Jesus presumably because it could be argued that he tricked gentiles into practising idolatry on a global scale.

As for Arianism, I am sure Unitarian Christians will be falling over each other to tell you that Unitarian Christianity is nothing like Arianism which is belief that Jesus was in some way divine, but not of co-equal status with God.

May I thank you for your persistent questioning. I fear most people don't care if they don't understand what I am saying and don't care to enquire further. These  people are in fact the greatest obstacle to understanding and engagement!

@ObjectiveEthics
So why are you referring to Gentiles who believe in the Abrahamic God as proto-muslim instead of just calling them Unitarians?  It seems like you might be over complicating your position.

@OfficialSecularKoranism
Because getting Americans to accept that the Founding Fathers were proto-Muslim would make them more receptive to Secular Koranism with American Characteristics.
22:00  Arian v Aryan

23:00  Christianity is only a cultural affiliation, like their football club. Of course they don't believe God exists to punish anyone for anything, and they certainly don't believe Jesus is God but, boy, do they love the idea of being crusading knights slaying Jews and Muslims in the Levant. Since they never believed God exists to punish them for anything, it is impossible to get them to take seriously the idea that idolatry is a mortal sin. It is impossible to wake a man who is only pretending to be asleep.

24:00  Claiming to be Christian gives Post-Christian/Post-Liberal Islamophobes an excuse to reject Islam/sharia.

28:00  Some White Nationalists convert to Islam when they realise that there are no single women of child-bearing age for them to marry in their Orthodox or Catholic Church that they have joined. When they realise that if they want to find women who share their values of social conservatism ie marriage and family values, they have to find them in mosques after converting to Islam.

However, Muslim men are also being divorced right, left and centre by Muslim women in the West using the rules of no fault divorce. When it is finally acknowledged that Western husbands are in fear of being divorced by their feminist wives for no reason at all, they might see the point of sharia abolishing no fault divorce by requiring engaged couples to agree a marriage contract and register their marriage contract with the Registry of Marriages before legally recognising their marriage.

AI Overview

Row over Sydney's gay street crossing | Australia news | The Rainbow crossings in Australia, designed to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community, have historically sparked debate over public safety versus artistic expression. Famous examples include a 2013 Sydney crossing removed due to safety hazards, and newer, safer installations in pedestrians-only zones, such as the March 2026 installation in Wollongong.

Key Examples and History:
Wollongong (2026): A new rainbow crossing was installed in March 2026 on a pedestrianized link between parking bays on Marine Drive, replacing an earlier, higher-risk location, notes the Wollongong City Council.

Sydney (2013): The first major Australian rainbow crossing was created on Oxford St, Darlinghurst, for the 35th Mardi Gras but was removed after a month due to safety concerns regarding pedestrians taking photos, reports Wikipedia and The Guardian.

Protests: Following the 2013 removal, residents used chalk to create their own DIY crossings in protest.

These crossings are often used to celebrate inclusivity and acknowledge the LGBTQIA+ community.
