To my brothers, the residents of England
I was deeply shocked to hear the blasphemous statements made by the Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis. He spoke arrogantly and contemptuously about our holy forefathers, and the holy prophets, Yaakov Avinu, David Hemelech, Shoul Hemelech , Iyov , Yonah and other leaders and prophets of the nation. It is beyond imagination that anyone could utter such statements, but, due to our many sins, no voice of protest has been heard.
Even though these statements are baseless in and of themselves, due to the desecration of the divine name one is obliged to protest them, in particular since many local residents (even amongst the religious) do not know how to respond with clear da'as Torah against these statements. If we remain silent, these heretical views could - Heaven forbid - take a foothold among us.
His statements are a direct continuation of the views espoused by the maskilim who interpreted Biblical events based on the thoughts of simple people. Such attitudes result in the publication of such terrible statements about our holy forefathers and prophets. Woe to the generation which has to witness this.
We have a tradition from our rabbis that in order to learn from the stories recorded in the Torah about our holy forefathers one has to realise that we cannot fathom their greatness and holiness. Their entire behaviour was exclusively devoted to the purpose of serving Hashem without any other extraneous consideration, and any decision or conduct on their part stemmed only from the motive of giving pleasure to Hashem. We have no notion of their greatness and depth of thought.
I am hereby fulfilling the duty to protest, and to declare that the aforementioned rabbi does not belong to the Torah-observant public, and all his statements are null and void in and of themselves.
I await great divine mercy.
