Why do you say Catholicism is the religion of the poor? Are you saying that because you think of the Irish as Catholics and of the Irish as poor people? Once upon a time in Europe, anyone who was anyone was Catholic. In fact, after Constantine Christianised the Roman Empire, his subjects had to be Christians too. The whole point of cuius regio, eius religio was that the subjects of an absolute monarch had to follow the religion of the king.
That was why the idea that any individual commoner could presume to have a different religion to that of the king was so revolutionary. Thank God for the Founding Fathers of America!
