The Praetorian Guard assassinated Roman Emperors.
The Praetorian Guard, established by Augustus in 27 B.C.E. to protect the Roman emperor, ultimately became a major force in imperial politics and assassinated numerous emperors.Over their existence, they were responsible for the deaths of at least thirteen Roman emperors.The Guard's power grew significantly, leading them to assassinate emperors they disliked or perceived as threats to their interests.Notable assassinations include Emperor Caligula in 41 C.E., who was killed by conspirators from the Guard, senators, and courtiers due to his tyrannical rule.After Caligula's death, the Praetorians installed his uncle Claudius as emperor.In 193 C.E., the Guard assassinated Emperor Pertinax after he attempted to reform their discipline, then auctioned off the imperial throne to Didius Julianus, who was later killed when the promised payment failed to arrive.The Guard also assassinated Emperor Caracalla in 217 C.E., when his Praetorian Prefect Macrinus killed him to fulfill a prophecy.Other emperors killed by the Guard include Commodus in 192 C.E., Elagabalus in 222 C.E., and Marcus Aurelius Probus in 282 C.E., among others.The Praetorian Guard's influence extended beyond assassination; they frequently intervened in imperial succession, installing emperors they believed would be compliant or beneficial to their interests.Their power became so dangerous that Emperor Constantine I disbanded the Guard in 312 C.E. after defeating them in battle, replacing them with the scholae palatinae, a smaller and more directly loyal bodyguard force.This move effectively ended the Guard's role as a political power broker and bodyguard, marking the end of an era in which the Praetorians had repeatedly assassinated the very emperors they were sworn to protect.
