3:00  The moral imperative

Kant's Supreme Principle of Morality

Immanuel Kant’s categorical imperative is the central concept of his deontological ethics, defined as an unconditional moral command that applies to all rational agents regardless of personal desires or consequences.  Unlike hypothetical imperatives, which are conditional on specific goals (e.g., "if you want to be healthy, exercise"), the categorical imperative dictates action simply because it is morally right.

Kant formulated this supreme principle of morality in several ways, primarily:

Formula of Universal Law: "Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law." This requires testing if the principle behind an action could be consistently applied by everyone without logical contradiction.

Formula of Humanity: "Treat humanity, whether in your own person or in that of another, always as an end and never as a means only." This emphasizes the intrinsic dignity and autonomy of every rational being, forbidding their use merely as tools for personal gain.

Kant argued that moral worth derives from duty rather than inclination or outcomes.  Actions are morally valid only if performed out of respect for the moral law itself, making the categorical imperative a rule of pure practical reason that binds all rational beings unconditionally.
