In Islam, asking permission and knocking or greeting before entering a home or private room is a command from Surah An-Nur (24:27-28) in the Quran. [1]
The Quranic Verse
- Surah An-Nur 24:27: "O you who believe! Do not enter houses other than your own until you have asked permission and greeted the inmates..." [1]
Key Etiquettes of Entering in Islam
- Knock gently or ring softly: Do not bang aggressively on the door or ring the bell loudly; early traditions note that people used to knock on the Prophet’s door gently with their fingernails. [2]
- Offer the greeting first: Say "As-salamu alaykum" (peace be upon you) before or while asking for entry. [3, 4]
- Identify yourself: Clearly state your name so the people inside know who is at the door without guessing or feeling anxious. [4]
- Stand to the side: Do not stand directly in front of the center of the door; stand slightly to the side so you do not peer directly inside when the door opens. [5]
- The rule of three: Knock or seek permission up to three times. If there is no response, you should leave so as not to inconvenience the host. [6]
- If told to go back: The Quran explicitly states that if you are told to return/go back, you must turn back gracefully without feeling offended. [1]
- Entering your own family's rooms: The Prophet Muhammad instructed that you should even seek permission or knock before entering your parents' or family members' private rooms to respect privacy and 'awrah (modesty). [7, 8, 9]
